Biography

Annabelle is the lead angel that welcomes dogs to Heaven. She is the big good throughout the franchise... except that there is an even bigger good in the TV episodes "Charlie's Angle" and "He Barked, She Barked," which happened to be a male named Chief (whose face is never seen). In All Dogs Go to Heaven, where she isn't named, only known as "Whippet Angel," she welcomes Charlie B. Barkin (twice) and, eventually, Carface Caruthers to Heaven. In All Dogs go to Heaven 2, where she is finally named, she makes her appearance in the sequel film bearing full attire of the lead angel. She also welcomes Itchy into Heaven during the second film. She has an evil cousin named Belladonna in the TV series and the third film.

All Dogs Go To Heaven

When Charlie is killed by Carface in the film, she welcomes Charlie who is in denial of accepting his place in heaven. They have a naturally rapport due to their meshing personalities. Charlie begins to dance with her and compliment her on her dancing ability which he claims is unusually for her breed, a whippet. She and Charlie sing a duet, but for opposite causes called "Let Me Be Surprised." During the song, Charlie is attempting to find solitude and rewind his life-clock to return to earth to revenge Carface Caruthers. He eventually finds a way to wind his time back and returns to earth. As he returns, her voice echos to him saying, "You can never come back..." Before Charlie has the nightmare due to a guilty conscious of disappointing Anne-Marie by stealing the wallet from Harold his watch opens and Annabelle's voice is echoing, "You can never come back..." After the nightmare, he takes to heart the gravity of her meaning "You can never come back..." thinking he is doomed if he maintains his former lifestyle.

In the finale of the film, she defeats the evil spirit that tries to claim Charlie after he drowned saving Anne-Marie. Charlie claims, "You said, I..." She resolvely to contrast his former disposition in her angelic voice, "Charlie, you gave your life for her... Come home." He begs her, "What about Anne-Marie?" She saying gracefully, "Say goodbye, Charlie." After Charlie says his goodbyes to both Itchy and Anne-Marie, he looks back one final time which Annabelle begs him calmly, "Charlie, come home." He accepts his spot in heaven and goes with her.

Annabelle has also welcomed Carface into Heaven after he was killed and devoured by King Gator. Carface attempts to wind his watch back to revenge against King Gator for killing him, but ends up getting chased throughout the skies by Annabelle who is fed up with anyone taking her kindness for weakness. She warns him calmly and gracefully, "If you touch that clock, you can never come back." Carface undermines this by retorting, "Shut up." She forcefully shouts while chasing him, "IF YOU TOUCH THAT CLOCK, YOU CAN NEVER COME BACK!"

Annabelle isn't even named in this film, only as "Whippet Angel."

All Dogs go to Heaven 2

Annabelle appears handing out Merit badges to well-deserving heaven dogs, including Carface who has so called "redeemed himself," but excluding Charlie who has yet to earn one. After Carface loses Gabriel's horn, Annabelle announces the news to all of the heavenly dogs and was at one point going to send one of them on a mission to retrieve it. Charlie, seeing this as a way of leaving heaven (which he has grown bored of), insists that he should be sent. A hesitant Annabelle instructs him on how to find it and gives him one miracle for emergency use, even sending heaven newcomer Itchy to accompany him. During his time on earth, an impatient Annabelle begs Charlie to hurry, but is constantly ignored, and becomes disappointed in Charlie when she witnesses him dumping the now found horn (inside a lobster cage) into a lake.

After Red has the horn, he imprisons all of the angel dogs, including Annabelle.

Soon after, when Charlie has the horn again and blows it, Annabelle and her angels are freed.

Eventually, Annabelle gives Charlie not only a Merit badge, but also permission to stay on Earth.

All Dogs Go To Heaven: TV Series

The series makes several changes to the second film. For example, Charlie and Sasha were shown as being together at the end of the second film, however, in the series, they seem to have never had a first date together. Also, in the second film, Itchy decides to stay in Heaven, but he is alive in the series, although it becomes clear later in the series why he is on Earth instead of being in Heaven. Charlie and Itchy live in San Francisco as guardian angels, being told of their missions by Annabelle. The series is a family sitcom, with Charlie and Itchy becoming embroiled in several misadventures in each episode, while trying to do the right thing. Charlie’s villainous rival, Carface, and his sidekick, Killer, also appeared in the series, as did Charlie’s dog friends, Sasha and Annabelle. The series also featured an antagonist named Belladonna, Annabelle's demonic cousin.

An All Dogs Christmas Carol

The film opens with angel puppies talking to Annabelle. They ask her to tell them a story. She begins to tell them about how Carface saved Christmas with a little guidance from Charlie and Itchy.

The movie begins in an alleyway with Charlie, Itchy, Sasha and their friends decorating for a Christmas party. Everyone is enjoying themselves as Charlie and Itchy tend to the young pups. Charlie checks on Sasha and the money collection for Timmy the puppy's operation for his bad leg. Unfortunately, Carface and Killer arrive and start collecting debts from everyone. After Charlie refused to pay back Carface, he blows a mysterious hypnotic dog whistle that hypnotizes all the dogs and causes them to give Carface and Killer all of their bones. Before leaving, Carface and Killer make off with all the food, the presents, their money which includes Timmy's operation money and head off cackling.

After failing several times to get the stolen goods from Carface, it is revealed that Carface is working for Annabelle's satanic cousin, Belladonna, who plots to use a massive version of the gigantic hypnotic dog whistle to hypnotize every dog in the city into stealing the Christmas presents, causing them to be thrown out of their houses and abandoned, much in the same way Carface was when he was a puppy. Charlie plots to scare "the Dickens" out of Carface and asks Annabelle for some aid, resulting in them being transformed into characters from A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Itchy becomes the Ghost of Christmas Past, Sasha becomes the Ghost of Christmas Present, and Charlie becomes the Ghost of Christmas Future with a Gospel-style song-and-dance. The three of them visit Carface and make him feel guilty about stealing the items, especially the operation money; Sasha tells Carface that without it Timmy will die, but Timmy's death will cause another his own, as the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come shows him that because of his actions, he will cause his own death, and he will be condemned to Hell for eternity.

Carface, having seen himself in Timmy, stops the whistle just in time to prevent the dogs from stealing the gifts. Belladonna flies into a rage and is about to kill Carface and Killer when she is frozen solid by a massive amount of snow caused by Annabelle. After Carface thanks Annabelle for saving him and Killer, she tells him to "think nothing of it" and that deep down inside, there is some good in him, and to let it out. She sends the two back, and, as if she is looking at the audience, says, followed by a laugh, "Oh. And good work."

Meanwhile, with Charlie and the gang, it starts to snow. When Charlie finds out Carface changed, he decides he, Itchy, and Sasha convinced Carface to save Christmas, but Annabelle says he made the decision himself and congratulates them on their most important mission before departing. Everyone celebrates, but Itchy remarks that it's a shame that they didn't have any presents to give the pups. Just then, Carface appears on a sled pulled by Killer, and gives them all the presents back, and more. He even gives them Timmy's money box back, which is filled up full. Carface turns to leave, and Sasha asks him to stay and join the party. Carface respectfully refuses, saying he's going to visit his mom, but wishes everyone a Merry Christmas.

Annabelle finishes the story by saying "Merry Christmas!" to the puppies (and the audience, whom she and the angel puppies wave to).

Annabelle's Personality

She is not known as "Annabelle" until the second film. She is a whippet breed and is known to be compassionate, empathetic and gracefully spoken. She gets forceful when she feels her kindness is taken for weakness, but still maintains her compassionate disposition even being forceful. It appears she has studied dancing (according to Charlie's observation of her breed not typically not having much rhythm).

Relationships

Charlie

Despite Charlie tricking her by winding the clock, she seems to have a certain fondness of Charlie as their personalities seem to mesh together. Towards the end of the film when Charlie dies for Anne-Marie, he goes back to earth summoned by the evil spirit once more to say goodbye to Anne-Marie. Annabelle comes during the visit, defeats the evil spirit in the end of the movie claiming his soul is for heaven having given his life to save Anne-Marie.

Carface

Annabelle reluctantly accepts Carface in heaven at the end of the original All Dogs go to Heaven film even after having to forcefully warn him about winding his life-clock back.

At the beginning of the second film, unaware that this isn't true, she gives a merit badge to Carface for "redeeming himself," but she is never aware that it is he who stole Gabriel's horn.

In the third film, at the end, after Carface has actually changed to save Timmy from dying from being unable to get cured, and Belladonna tries to kill him and Killer, Annabelle stops her with snow to save them. She then tells Carface to let out the good that's deep down inside him more often and sends him and Killer home.

Itchy

Annabelle warmly welcomes Itchy into heaven at the beginning of the All Dogs go to Heaven 2 film. At the end of the film, he goes with Annabelle leaving Charlie behind as he accepts his place in heaven.

Notes

She was voiced by Melba Moore in the first All Dogs go to Heaven film.
She was voiced by Bebe Neuwirth in the rest of the franchise.
In the first and third films, Annabelle's hair bunches are white, whereas in the second film and the television series, it is pink like her primary fur.
Annabelle refers to Charlie as so in the first film, but everywhere else, she refers him to as "Charles." Of course, she does call him by his actual name once near the end of the second film.
